PAST NEWS - 2009

Olyvia Brown makes donation to PHS for her BD

Olyvia Brown from Heuvelton NY stopped by the shelter on her
birthday (Dec. 14th). She brought cleaning supplies, and treats
for the animals instead of asking for presents for herself.

Thank you Olyvia and we hope you had the best birthday ever!

Lancaster's black-tie fundraising event:

John and Christine Lancaster recently hosted a black-tie
fundraising event for our capital campaign.

Deborah Valley (L) and David Acker, CEO of Canton Potsdam Hospital,
enjoy friendly conversation at the Lancaster's Black Tie Holiday event
to benefit the Potsdam Humane Society. The donations received
will help fund the Medical Community Challenge of $100,000 for
the Potsdam Humane Society's "Labor of Love" capital campaign.
Funds will be used for the new surgical suite in the new animal shelter.

Gina Lizardi (L) and Dr. Jose Lizardi happily pose with hostess
Christine Lancaster (R) at a November fundraising event for
our North Country animals. The Lizardi family have been loyal
supporters of the Potsdam Humane Society for many years, and
recently have supplied the "energy" to get the medical challenge
   off the ground.

Emily Smith makes donation to PHS for her 7th BD

Emily Smith of Potsdam turned 7 years old on 10/24 2009.
She collected treats, cleaning supplies, and cash donations
for the shelter instead of asking for things for herself.

   Thank you, Emily. You Rock!

Please help Hermie

Hermie was found on the reservation starving and full of worms.
The ACO on the reservation ask us if we could help and of course
we said yes. Herme has been severely neglected in his 4 months
of life. We really need to get him on a special diet and start from
scratch with his vaccines and meds. All donations to help Hermie
will be deeply appreciated. We want to get this sweet boy well
and get him a home for the holidays.

Lawrence Ave 3rd Grade class visits PHS shelter

On Monday November 23rd the third grade class from
Lawrence Ave School in Potsdam made a trip to the
Potsdam Humane Society's animal shelter. The children
donated treats for the dogs and cats and paper products
for the shelter. A *big* thank-you from all of us at PHS
to the kids and their teacher, Joanna Turbett.

Brook Stevenson makes donation to PHS for her 11th BD

Brook Stevenson (below), Potsdam, turned 11 years old on

   Thank you, Brook!

Cruisin' for Critters raises $3,300 for PHS

The Star Touring and Riding Chapter #289 held their fourth annual
August Cruisin’ for Critters benefit ride for the Potsdam Humane Society.
Pictured in front of the Labor of Love capital campaign themometer is
this year’s organizer, Launi Bush (left) presenting PHS’s interim
director, Anne Smith and canine “employee, Natty Bumppo,
with a check for $3,300. The bikers’ four year total is a whopping
   $8,900!

Barrett’s Paving of Norfolk contributed $1000 of this generous gift,
which is greatly appreciated by the non profit group that is in the
midst of a capital campaign to renovate and double the size of the
animal shelter at 17 Madrid Ave. in the Village of Potsdam.

“Thank you” does not seem strong enough to convey the sentiment
of the staff and board of directors. The community is really supporting
PHS on an ongoing basis. Without public support and donations, the
shelter would not be able to function.

Delaney Obrian asks friend to help PHS for her 5th Birthday

Delaney Obrian turned five in October and instead of asking for
presents she asked her friends to donate animal supplies and
treats plus cash to the Potsdam Humane Society.

Thank you, Delaney! Your wonderful thoughtfulness makes it
possible for us to find homes for animals that find their
   way to our doorstep.

Kids rule! Fourth graders organize school donation

Kristen Parker and Emma Ormsby, two fourth grade students from
Lawrence Ave Elem School, recently raised $200 for the animals
at the Potsdam Humane Society shelter. The girls took their
fundraising idea to their principal, Mr. Larry Genne, telling him
they thought that a pet photo display would be great fun for
everyone. For a $1 charge, students and staff could display a
picture of their pets. Mr. Genne not only gave permission for
the event, but enthusiastically encouraged the students by making
the presentation poster board and providing a prominent viewing
   location.

"These two students along with all the supporters at the Lawrence
Avenue school are to be commended for their fund raising efforts.
With young people like this, the future of a nonprofit, like the Potsdam
Humane Society, is secure, and will continue its mission to provide
humane care for the animals in our area," said Mr. Genne.

Hooray for Potsdam's Lawrence Avenue school kids and staff!

Kristen Parker (left) and Emma Ormsby (right) present a $200 cash
donation to Samantha Bell (center), PHS staff member, and her

animals to assure their good health.

Thank you, Morgan, Haley and Maia! All of us at the Potsdam
   Humane Society appreciate your efforts.

Kids rule! Another lemonade stand donation

We are so fortunate to have so many young people working
for the animals at the Potsdam Humane Society shelter.
Here are Brigid Barstow, Makenzie Martin and Brittany Martin
who also put up a lemonade stand to help the animals in our
   shelter.

Thank you, Brigid, Makenzie and Brittany! The animals really
   do appreciate your thoughtfulness.

Kids rule! Lemonade stand sales donation

Four remarkable kids decided to open a lemonade stand over this
past weekend and donate the money they made to the shelter.
Together Autumn and Dharma Crabtree and Emma and Caleb
Bentley-Hicks raised over $30 for the animals at the Potsdam
   Humane Society shelter.

Thank you, Autumn, Dharma, Emma and Caleb! We cannot do this
   without everyone's help and commitment.

   and ticket information.

Clarification of Rurual Development grant/loan

Recent reports by local media that the Potsdam Humane Society
has received $500,000 in grant money as part of the 2009
Economic Stimulus Program would be very welcome news
if it were true. The actual news is less dramatic, but still
   very important.

The Potsdam Humane Society has applied for funding assistance
for their Shelter Expansion/Renovation Project through USDA Rural
Development. The funds that could be received from this program
will include a grant and loan contribution totaling approximately
$500,000, or about half of the total funds needed for the project.
This loan must be repaid (at 3% interest) through the continued
   support of the community.
The remaining contributions will be provided through private
donations. Total funds collected to date from donations totals
$365,000, leaving a balance of $636,000 left to be raised. The PHS
hopes to receive formal notification from Rural Development by the
end of August regarding the details of the funds that will be
received through their Community Facilities Program.

Wood Chop Shop donates mower to PHS

Recently the PHS lawn mower sputtered to the end of its
useful life. When the Wood Chop Shop was contacted about
purchasing a refurbished lawn mower, Steve Gollinger,
the manager of the store, generously donated a re-
   furbished model they had.

Thank you, Steve, and thank you Wood Chop Shop!

Colton-Pierrepont students donate $500

The Safe Schools Healthy Students Leadership team advised
by Gayle Hayes and the eighth graders at Colton Pierrepont
Central School, advised by Bonnie McGee and Lezlie Gray,
recently held a carnival at the school. A portion of the proceeds
were donated to the Potsdam Humane Society. What a
valuable lesson for the kids to learn about volunteering and
   working for non-profit organizations.

In the photo below, Jan Morgan (left) holds Nick, adopted dog
alumna of PHS, as she accepts a $500 check from Nick McCarthy,
   Colton-Pierrepont Students' Leadership team representative.

Kathy Brainard, was recently recognized for her compassion
and generosity to the animals of the North Country. She was
presented with several gifts and a certificate of appreciation
   that read:

to the animals of the North Country. The number of animals
in your loving foster and adoptive care far exceeds the call of
'duty'. Your frequent out-of-pocket gifts for the critters does
not go unnoticed and is greatly appreciated. We sincerely
appreciate your knowledge, dedication and love for our
companion animals, and want to recognize you for them.

Linda Camaano and Anne Smith Travel to ZooToo Awards
Linda Caamano and Anne Smith will be traveling to LasVegas on
Monday, April 6th. A representative from all top 20 shelters must
be on stage to receive their prize and to learn if they are a top 10
finalist. PHS has already won $5000 by finishing in the top 20, but
if they are selected as one of the top 10 finalists, the prize doubles
   to $10,000.

"No matter what happens in Vegas, we are winners", said Bonnie
Boyd, President of the Potsdam Humane Society. "North Country
people needto be thanked over and over for making all of this
possible. The animal shelter belongs to the community and the
community has shown, with the help of Zootoo, that when everyone
works together great things are possible. Many fundraisers are
planned for the coming months. People are fired up to help the
animals. As in Vegas, we are on a roll!"

Zootoo Founder Visits PHS Animal Shelter
Hundreds rallied in support of the Potsdam Humane Society
on March 17th as officials from Zootoo visited our local shelter
This is part of a million dollar shelter makeover contest sponsored by
zootoo.com, a website dedicated to bringing pet lovers together
and raising awareness of local shelters by encouraging local communities
to become more involved in and committed to the welfare of homeless
   animals.

The March 17th event was attended by hundreds of local residents,
college students, school age students from Potsdam, Madrid, Lisbon,
Canton and Clarkson employees. All were there to welcome Richard
Thompson, the founder of Zootoo. This visit was part of his nationwide
tour of the top 20 semi-finalists in the makeover contest.

The Potsdam Humane Society will be represented in Las Vegas on April 7
when the top 10 finalists will be announced. Finalists are chosen based
on the needs of the shelter, and, most importantly, by the level of
support that the community shows for its shelter, and the programs
and outreach that each shelter provides to its community. Supporters
can continue to increase the chances of the Potsdam Humane Society
being chosen as a top 10 finalist by logging on to zootoo.com, be-
coming a member, and participating on the site by writing reviews of
the shelter, your experiences, how great the need is for renovation
and expansion of the current facility, and the general support this
community has for the PHS shelter.

PHS in top 20 of zootoo contest! Visit from zootoo on 3/17

From Bonnie Boyd, President, Potsdam Humane Society:

A huge heartfelt thank you to the people of the North Country!
Because of your votes the Potsdam Humane Society has finished in the
top 20 (11th on Friday) in the million dollar makeover contest
   sponsored by zootoo.com.

Richard Thompson, founder and owner of zootoo.com, and his crew are
coming to Potsdam at noon on Tuesday, March 17th, St. Patrick's Day to
visit and film festivities at the Potsdam Humane Society's animal shelter.
Everyone who is able to be on hand is invited to line Madrid Avenue as
they cheer and wave posters, banner and balloons. Local officials from
several towns as well as children from four area schools( MWCS, Potsdam,
Canton and NNCS), college students, recent adoptors, staff, board
members...just everyone needs to welcome zootoo to our beautiful
   North Country.

Zootoo officials judge the worthiness of the shelters by how
enthusiastically the community rallies behind them. Potsdam hopes that
the turnout on Tuesday will convince zootoo that Potsdam HS needs to be
in the top ten finalists...on the way tothat million dollar makeover! (2nd
   prize=$50,000 and 3rd prize=$25,000 aren't shabby either!)

Ruth Garner, former Potsdam mayor, will be throwing her support our way
as she gets a tattoo at "Sleepy Hollow Tattoo" on Market Street in the
village. The tattoo business is donating proceeds of all tattoos on St.
Patrick's day to the Potsdam Humane Society's capital campaign. McDuff's
Tavern's cover charge the 17th goes to the animals as well. SUNY
Potsdam Greek organizations are having a bottle drive on March 18th.
Mahoney's Auto Mall is donating $100 for every car sold in March...and
   the list goes on!

Community spirit is alive and well in the North Country. We applaud
people for supporting the animals with over a half million points on
   zootoo.

People are excited and smiling over what zootoo has done for the North
Country (Jefferson Co. SPCA is also in the top 20!) What a great "high"
we are getting in these rather low economic times. Zootoo.com/makeover
contest is a work of genius. It's free voting for your favorite shelter gets
everyone involved. And our north country folks are just plain awesome!

looked and walked like a porcupine! ...Please read more on "Hope"

Ron Kilgore Donates Time & Talent
The Potsdam Humane Society would like to sincerely thank Ron Kilgore,
of Kilgore Construction, for the hours of donated time and talent he
has given recently to the shelter. He has voluntarily fixed damaged
kennel doors, removed old and unused equipment to provide more
storage room, reviewed electrical issues, and is helping to repair faulty
wiring and outlet problems. Service like this is appreciated beyond
measure, as it not only saves us the cost of paying for the repairs,
but also helps to make our facility safer, more efficient, and more
comfortable for our homeless animals. Ron's work is professional,
efficient, and done with a smile. Thank you, Ron!
